Ok, this is just an idea I've had for a while, and i think it could breathe some interesting political life into the boards, and perhaps take the political pressure of QNs, lol. not that political discussion is bad.
I think that a sort of debaters corner should be set up in the Zone, and it should be run like a proper debate, where people can apply to actually argue something, and someone could also apply to oppose them.
I have worked under a similar system on another forum and written a constitution for them, but the basic way it works is this.
1. 2 people, or 2 teams of people decide they want to have a debate on something intelligent, like the Iraq war or tax rates.
2. the proposition of the arguement would speak first, followed by the opposition. each would get another chance to speak after that. After their second turn, the public may speak and argue the topic for a certain amount of time.
3. After the time is up, the opposition would make their final summing up, followed by the proposition.
4. after this, a poll or topic for voting would be set up, and the people would have a certain amount of time to cast their votes. After voting is over, the one who has the most votes is declared the winner of the debate.
The debates should be submitted in an argueable form, such as in a statement like, "We the people believe that a woman should have the right to an abortion".
It would require a moderator of some kind to ensure debates were kept to schedual and on topic, but I really think, if someone wanted to do it it would be fun and informative. I'd offer to help out if i could, and I hope other people will consider my suggestion.

It does indeed sound like an interesting idea, though you'd have to hope that it didn't become a popularity contest.
Well, it's not meant to be a popularity contest, it's meant to debate serious real world issues, not zone popularity ones.
I know. I'm just saying that there's the possibility that it'd turn into one.
Very interesting. Are you suggesting this for a board, voice chat, its own feature, etc? There's a few ways we could do this.

Well, there does need to be able to be a moderator for this to be able to work, someone who can rule if a post should be ignored as it's off topic or something like that, and someone who could deem if a debate is logical and so on, maybe it could be a way to win points too, by winning a debate or something. the way to win is to gain the popular support of the zone.
The way we do it, because it's on an invisionfree forum, but those aren't the easiest things for everyone to use, Is that we have our own forum for it, so perhaps we could have our own section of the site, or our own bored called the debaters corner and smeone could be the moderater.
However, there should be a way for the moderator to create polls, that's really importat, then people can remain anonymous when voting.

I like the idea as well, perhaps the way poles and topics are created here, could be done in a simular way to how we create pools for Sports Challenge. J? Chris?
I like this idea, but am unsure how it would work.
I would also like to see topic starters on the boards be able to setup a poll associated with their topic. But, I guess that's off topic here (no pun intended).

This is a good idea, and I would hope that anyone who debates me wouldn't start crying.
I like the idea for both text and voice chat.
the thing about hving a text version means we can have the poll and people can read it at their own pace.

the idea is that everyone gets a chance to contribute after the two serious debaters get their turn. it's a good system, one person may only have something small to add so may not wish to take on the full debate. things like this are good for political awareness and education nd stuff.
It really is a fine idea. One way I think that would be cool for it to work is. Create a pole and then a debating boards . give people a chance to work out there ideas and stances. Then maybe at the end of the month or a 6 week period. record a debate or do it live similar to the way the idle or tune trivia! 2 Moderaters who I would think would do well are Q and Harp maybe even Chris N.

So, is anyone going to aproach any of the CL's or Admins with this idea, or do you want me to start a site and we migrate to it?
hmmm, well the admin has already seen it, so we'll see what becomes of it, you could aproach them and ask them what they think, for their input and any other thoughts and/or ideas. I really really like this idea. Good way to try and open up people's mind and stuff.
I think it is an awsome idea and will bring a bit of a change to the site making it a bit more serious. I hope it goes through in some form.
that's what i'm hoping for, there's not much of a serious side to the site. and i think this will help a great deal.

Yes, this would be really cool! I am on a varcidy debate team and love to debate so bring it on! In addition, if this needes mods or something, I would love to help it along! Sorry for bringing this back up to the top but I thought it would really be cool.
